Is your home truly designed for rest? Many homeowners believe so, but our Studio has visited hundreds of houses and found the same problems again and again. Here are seven warning signs.
One. There are no soft places
If every seat in your home is hard, angular and upright, you may be living in a waiting room. Add at least three soft surfaces, preferably near a radiator.
Two. All the sunlight arrives at noon
Midday light is harsh and short. A proper home catches the light in the morning and the late afternoon, and holds it in a cosy patch. If your sun comes and goes in an hour, consider moving a window or a sofa.
Three. The blinds are always down
We understand the need for privacy. But a blind that is permanently closed is a barrier to joy. Open it a little. The cat will thank you, and the neighbours will thank you for doing so.
Four. There is nowhere to hide
A good home has at least one dark, quiet place for retreat. A wardrobe with the door open, a gap behind the sofa, a space beneath the bed. If your home has none, create one.
Five. The heating is on a timer
A timer does not understand the needs of a living creature. It will switch off just when the cat has found the perfect spot. Switch to a more responsive system, such as a person who feels the cold.
Six. Everything is tidy
A tidy home leaves little room for nesting. A scarf on a chair, a coat on a bed or a pile of clean laundry can transform a space. We recommend leaving three items out at all times, as a gesture of hospitality.
Seven. There is a vacuum cleaner in plain view
The vacuum cleaner is a monster. Hide it.
If a house cannot hold a nap, it cannot hold a family.
What to do next
Count the warning signs. If you have fewer than three, congratulations. If you have more than five, please call our office. If you have all seven, please sit down, and have a lie down.
We offer a free thirty minute consultation to anyone who needs it. Bring a blanket.
